Colleen. I am glad you brought this mystery to the table for discussion. I have been asking myself the same thing. How does the chicken know it's way home? And how do you know if someone else were to take your wandering chicken and eat it? I have no idea. When I asked my colleagues, they said "When you buy a chicken, you just show it where it will stay and it will know."
I have been told that when I go to the North, I might be given chickens as a gift. I will do an experiment and report back. I will show it where its home is, and see if it comes back!!!

If you can answer this age old question I will be waiting to hear about how you won the lottery or found a pot of gold. The question has plagued society for centuries because really who knows why the chicken crossed the road - maybe it was to go home?!?!
Glad I am not the only one who is consumed by these thoughts. Laura please keep me updated, I may be doing the same experiment with a guinea foul or goat.
I wish my sheep knew its way home. I got a virtual sheep (female) as a gift two years ago, but I keep forgetting to claim it and feast on it. My director told me I have to come back to Mongolia next year, cause then it *really* has to go under the knife...
